Create a Modern Grid with Row and Column Sets

Beginning in Strategy One (June 2026), you can create sets of rows on modern grids. Row sets do not display on Library Mobile for iOS.

A modern grid can display microcharts, column sets, and row sets in the same visualization. They are complex grids that analyze different aspects of data across a common dimension. This means you can have multiple unrelated attributes and metrics in different sets of columns or rows that are then stitched together in one grid. Column and row sets can display at varying levels of aggregation, so you can report on one attribute at the yearly level and another on the quarterly level, for example.

  • microchart is a small version of a visualization shown without labels. It conveys information so that a user can, at a glance, determine the trend of a metric over time or how a metric is performing compared to forecasted figures. See Create a Modern Grid with Microcharts.

  • Multiple column sets are combined horizontally in a single grid with shared rows, with separate formatting and filters. The example below contains multiple column sets: ratings by group (the columns on white background); amount by industry (the In-Budget and Not-In Budget columns), variance by time period (green background columns), and other (in blue).

  • Multiple row sets are stacked vertically in a single grid with shared columns. Each row set can have its own independent formatting and advanced filters. Row sets are useful for financial reporting scenarios such as profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and corporate earnings reports. The example below displays three row sets (Sales Channel, Customer Type, and Product Category) with a single metric (Balance) in the column.

The row sets display in outline mode, so you can expand each level of each column set independently. In the image below, Offline Sales and Online Sales in the Sales Channel row set are expanded to show details.

Row sets are not available if the modern grid contains a microchart or multiple column sets.

Create a Modern Grid with Sets

  1. In the top toolbar, click Visualization .

  2. Choose Grid then Grid (Modern) .
  3. You can create one row set and multiple column sets, or multiple row sets and one column set.
    • To create a column set, in the Editor panel, click Add Microcharts/Column Set in the Columns drop zone, and select Column Set. Drag and drop attributes and metrics to the new column set drop zone.
    • To create a row set, in the Editor panel, click Add Row Set in the Rows drop zone, and select Add Row Set. Drag and drop attributes and metrics to the new row set drop zone.
  4. If you added a row set, add attributes and metrics to the Columns drop zone.

    • If you add objects to the Rows drop zone, a new row set is added automatically.

  5. If you added a column set, add attributes to the Rows drop zone.

    • If you add objects to the Columns drop zone, a new column set is added automatically.

  6. To rename a set, double-click the set name, type the new one, and press the Enter key. Row set names display on the grid, so provide a more meaningful name than the default. Column set names do not.

  7. To change the order that sets display on the grid, in the Editor panel, drag and drop a set into a new position.

  8. You can total the rows and columns of the modern grid.

  9. To filter a specific column or row set, create an advanced filter.

  10. Starting in Strategy One (March 2025), you can format a modern grid at a more granular level. You can individually format each attribute and each metric column, as well as format all attributes, all metrics, or all microcharts at once. For more information on this individual formatting, see Format Panel for Grid Visualizations. For general information on formatting grids, including modern grids, see Format a Grid.

Note: If you add a column to a grid to adjust aggregation, joins, thresholds, or sorting, you may not want end users to view the actual values or elements. In a modern grid, you can hide a column from display. The metric or attribute still displays in the Editor panel, but not on the grid when editing or viewing the dashboard. To hide the column, right-click the column header and select Hide Column. To redisplay it, click the menu icon for the grid and select Show Hidden Columns.

  • An end user viewing the dashboard does not know that any columns are hidden. However, an end user can hide and show columns as well, but it applies only to that user's view of the dashboard. For steps, see Hide Columns in a Modern Grid.
