Format Panel for Map Visualizations

Once you add a map visualization to a dashboard, you can format it.

Access

1. Open an existing dashboard that contains a map visualization.
2. Select the entire visualization or just the area you want to format.

3. The Editor, Filter, and Format panels are stacked together by default. Click Format to open it.

   • If the Format panel is not available, do one of the following:

     • Starting in Strategy One (November 2025), click the Format icon in the left toolbar.

     • Prior to Strategy One (November 2025), from the View menu, select Editor Panel to display all three panels. Click Format to open it.

   • Starting in Strategy One (November 2025), you can place the Editor, Filter, and Format panels above and below each other as though in a column. To do this, drag one panel to the bottom of another. You can then adjust the relative height of the panels by hovering your cursor over the line dividing the panels and dragging the resizing icon up or down.

Visualization Options

Map Layout Select the base map and style.

• Map Style: Select the display theme to use when showing the map (that is, Street, Topographic, and so on).

• Show Toolbar: Select this check box to display the map toolbar, which allows end users to select areas; show and hide labels, legend, and tooltips; change map styles, and zoom.

Zoom Behavior Determine whether to refit the map area when end users select map locations:

• Select Dynamic to dynamically refit the contents for optimal display of the selected map locations.

• Select Static to keep the current level of magnification when end users select locations on the map.

  • For static zoom, you can select the Remember Zoom Level check box to maintain the current level of magnification.

• Freeze Pan and Zoom: Select this option to prevent end users from panning, zooming, tilting, and rotating on the map.

• Zoom Through Layers: (Available when the map contains more than one layer) Select this check box to define the zoom level for each layer using the sliders, ranging from World to Street. Right-click a slider thumb and select whether to exclude or include layers. Hover over a thumb to view the zoom level. Adjust the default zoom level of the map using the slide ruler. The legend updates accordingly.

Data Points Select options for displaying your data points.

• Type: Select whether to display a map with markers, bubbles, areas, or density areas.

• Boundaries: If you select Area in Type, select Countries of the World or Custom Shape to create the area boundaries. To use custom shapes, you must Upload KML Files for Google Map Visualizations.

• Shape: If you select Marker in Type, choose one of the following map marker shapes:

  • For Geospatial maps: Circle, Pins, Squares, Diamonds, Dynamic Pins

  • For Google maps: Circle, Pins, Squares, Diamonds

  • For ESRI maps: Pins, Squares, Diamonds, Dynamic Pins

• Enable Clustering: If you select Bubble or Marker in Type, you can enable map markers to be clustered together when a large number of map markers displays in the same map area. Each cluster of markers displays as a separate bubble or image marker.

  • End users can double-click a cluster to zoom in and display the individual map markers in the cluster.

  • For ESRI maps, you can Show Details in Ring. End users can hover their cursors over each cluster to view attribute elements and metric values for the clustered data points.

• Data Labels:  If you select Area, Bubble, or Marker in Type, you can enable or disable data labels. Data labels display for each data point.

  • To display the attribute elements in the data labels, click abc.

  • To display the metric values in the data labels, click 123.

  • You can display both text and values.

  • Hide Overlapping Labels: Select this check box to hide labels that overlap each other.

Legend Enable this option to display a legend on the map. This option is available if you are using thresholds to define colors.

Text and Form

Select options for text and shapes.

Shape

• Fill: Select the fill color and opacity for map shapes. The higher the percentage, the more opaque the map shape. This option is available for marker, bubble, and area maps.

• Border: Select the border style and color of map shapes. This option is only available for bubble and area maps.

Title and Container

Format the visualization’s title and container (think of the container as the object that holds the visualization).

Title Bar

You can enable or disable the Title Bar.

• When it is enabled, you can Customize the Visualization's Title Bar by selecting the fill color, font options, whether to display one or two lines, and personalize action buttons.

Container

• Fill: Select the background color of the visualization from the palette.

• Border: Select the style and color of the visualization's borders from the drop-down lists.

• Beginning in Strategy One (September 2025), you can adjust the Radius of rounded corners for the container.

  • Use a number between 0 and 40.

  • If the current Padding is less than 50% of the updated Radius, Padding automatically increases to match 50% of the new Radius.

• Beginning in Strategy One (November 2025), you can apply a Shadow effect on the container. Select the fill color and opacity of the shadow. Define the shadow effects using the following options:

  • Blur: Controls the softness of the edge to diffuse or spread out the shadow. The range is from 0 to 40, where 0 is a sharply defined line and 40 is the most blurred.

  • Distance: Offsets the shadow from the container. Distance provides a 3D look, implying hierarchy or focus.

  • Angle: Sets the direction of the shadow around the container, measured in degrees. For example, to display the shadow:

    • Directly on the right, use 0.

    • On the bottom and right, use 45.

    • Below the container, use 90.

    • On the top, use 270.
