Create a Google Maps Visualization

Starting in Strategy (August 2026), create Google Maps visualizations. Use Google Maps visualizations to create visualizations that utilize the intuitive, high-performance map application for business users.

Prerequisites for Strategy (August 2026)

If you are using Strategy (August 2026), click here to expand the prerequisites you must follow.

An Administrator must enable Enable Google Maps as a visualization option for your environment to ensure Google Map visualizations display as an option. For more information, see Edit All Server-Level Settings.

Enable the Feature Flag

If you are using Strategy (August 2026), use the following steps to enable the feature flag:

Add the follow line to the WEB-INF/classes/config/configOverride.properties file on your Library Server:

Restart the Library Server.
Contact Strategy Support to configure the Google Maps key.

Enable the Google Maps Visualization Setting

Open the Workstation window.
In the Navigation pane, click Environments.
If you are using Workstation for Desktop, right-click a connected environment and choose Properties.
In the left pane, click All Settings.
Toggle on Enable Google Maps as a visualization option.

Accept the Google Maps Terms

Open Workstation.
Reconnect to your environment.
In the Navigation pane, click Environment Settings.
In the left navigation, click Map Configuration.
Toggle on Enable Google Maps as a visualization option.
Review the Google Maps Terms of Service.
Click Accept.

If you close or Cancel the Terms of Service, the setting remains disabled.

Create a Google Maps Visualization

Open a dashboard with a dataset that includes geo attributes.
- See Prepare Geographical Data for Display for information on geo attributes/roles.
In the top, click Visualization .
Point to Map, then select Google Maps.

If this option is not available and you recently configured the visualization, log out and log in again.
In the Datasets panel, double-click attributes and metrics to add them to the visualization.
- A map requires at least one geo attribute.
You can create the following types of maps. To change the map type, on the Visualization Options tab of the Format panel, expand Data Points.
- Area: Fills regions with color. Needs at least one geo attribute and one metric that provides the shapes (see Upload KML Files for Google Map Visualizations).
- Bubble: Identifies specific locations with bubbles that can be sized and/or colored to indicate data values. Add metrics to color and size the bubbles.
- Density: Identifies hot spots or clusters of data values. Add a metric for the color and specify the threshold.
- Marker: Identifies specific locations with markers. Add a metric to color the markers.
